He then travels to Hong Kong where he meets the glamorous chief of ISP's local bureau, May-Ling.

Together they begin to unravel a complex web of corruption. The twin spiders at the centre of this web are the Chan brothers, leaders of one of Hong Kong's most ruthless and powerful triad gangs.

A Jack Calder Novel

THE VIOLIN MAN’S LEGACY Jack Calder Crime Series #1 eBook seumas gallacher

When the company Gemtec had a big shipment of diamonds taken in a deadly heist during transportation, ex-SAS soldier Jack Calder and his specialist security firm, ISP, immediately became involved. Their investigations began in Holland where Gemtec was located, but Jack soon travelled to Hong Kong when he realised the Far East connection was deep.

When Jack met up with Hong Kong’s ISP chief, May-Ling, he understood how she had attained the high profile she had – her intelligence and immediate grasp of the facts was fascinating. And as the two of them came to discover, the Triad gangs in Hong Kong were part of the whole fiasco. Working with former SAS colleagues, high profile and trusted police and others, Jack and his team strove to find the evidence they needed. But would they? The good people who’d been ruthlessly murdered made it personal to Jack – he owed them…

The Violin Man’s Legacy by Seumas Gallacher is a fast-paced, gripping and intense international thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed. If I hadn’t needed a "V" for a challenge, it would probably still be languishing on my kindle – I’m so glad to have read this. And I already have book two waiting on the sidelines! This author is new to me, but I’m impressed with his writing – the necessary ruthlessness, with a gentleness to balance the characters. Highly recommended.

THE VIOLIN MAN’S LEGACY Jack Calder Crime Series #1 eBook seumas gallacher Reviews

This was a VERY enjoyable read. I like spy and crime novels, but I do NOT like disgusting graphic violence.... I understand violence is part of crime and necessary to the telling, and this has some graphic violence - but described in a very "acceptable" way. I don't enjoy it if the telling is so graphic I want to lose my lunch....
This was a well-written, well-planned, well-paced, well executed plot from page 1. Not too perfectly tied up with ribbons like some of the 007 stories... this remained believable to a reader of the genre. Some authors put more depth into each main character, and I enjoy that when it's well done - but hate it when it overshadows the plot... so, Seumas didn't take us too deeply into our Captain Jack or his best friends, but deeply enough to bring us to care about them, and keep the spy aspect of the plot jogging right along! While fast-paced and exciting, it isn't filled with death-defying acts left and right that the main guy keeps surviving against all odds...those are silly. These are well-thought-out crimes and detective followups, with a believable element of danger. The dialogue is rarely over-done, coming across as natural, and in telling just the right amount of information.
I also love to travel - in reality and in my mind - so the many exciting locales of this book were a major enjoyment as well. It held my interest and kept me thinking - I didn't do a "well this is the secret bad guy" thing I can sometimes do - & don't enjoy - I want to be kept wondering if my hunches are right until the end. There were a couple of surprises along the way and I'm always glad of those. I will definitely be checking out if the rest of the series is as good as this one. This one was a highly enjoyable read and has the next in the series almost in my Cart as I write this.
Jack Calder was born into a working class family in Govan, a rough dockside neighborhood of Glasgow. His father, Tommy, was called the Violin Man on account of his passion for the music of Yehudi Menuhin. Austerity struck the family hard, and Jack’s childhood ended early.
After a number of years in the Special Air Services, the U.K.’s elite black ops regiment, Jack has left to joined ISP, a highly respected security firm founded by Julian Townsend, a former major in the SAS.
Within a few days of each other, there are two major heists in Amsterdam. One involves a shipment of gold bullion, and the other a transport of diamonds from South Africa. The heists are expertly carried off. An SAS veteran is killed in the first one, and two employees of the gem company’s security company are killed in the second. Jack Calder is called in to investigate.
In the second heist the diamonds are carried off by men on motorcycles. A witness reveals that commands to the riders were spoken in Chinese. After a week or so the gems begin to appear in Hong Kong. It becomes clear that the heist is the work of Chinese triads in league with one or more insiders in the Gemtec company. An ISP employee named May-Ling is brought in to help Jack investigate the Hong Kong connection. She tells Jack that the heist may be the work of one of two rival triads in Hong Kong, the Mok Kwong Cho or the Ching Tan Ka. The latter is better organized and managed, under the direction of a pair of identical twins, Jonnie and Jimmie Half Moon, so called because they each have a red crescent birthmark.
The Violin man’s legacy is fast paced and exciting. There is a lot of action and a bit of romance. Jack and his co-workers devise a brilliant plan to destroy the triad and to uncover the insider links to the heist. If you enjoy mysteries and crime thrillers you will love this book.
